I have no objectives
I've been convinced not to aim at anything and instead to become aimless and eternally curious. Maybe I will become a CEO, or maybe I won't. Right now, I have decided to live my life with no ambitious goals but just with ambitious curiosity.
Reading Greatness Cannot be Planned is moving some gears up my head. I can see clearly now how setting ambitious goals hasn't paid off for me the way I hoped it would.
There is a better way to go at an ambitious life. Goals help reach mediocrity; Curiosity and drive help reach the stars.
I've tried to fit my life and journey into a preselected route. That's not how it works. No matter how excited you are about this idol or the other, mimicking them will not give you their life. And if you could, their journey is already written out, It would get boring pretty fast if you knew what was gonna happen. Carving your own story, on the other hand? Much more open to exciting turnarounds.
If you aim to do great things, unless its the very next step in your path(you are already a recognized mathematician, you could aim for a nobel prize), having such big goals can prevent you from taking actions that look "off the path" but that will bring you closer to greatness. Bob Dylan won the Pulitzer prize precisely because he didn't aim for it.
If you are a failing actor, you could have the potential to become the best director ever, but you will never figure it out without trying different paths. The same for engineers who would make great fashion brand managers.
Sometimes, the skill set you have would put you at the elite level in another space.
If you are content with being a PhD, MBA graduate who works at an important company, that's awesome. I'm not talking about you. I'm talking about whoever wants to be the next Darwin, Einstein, Jobs, Musk, Bukowski.
You won't find greatness by trying to make sense of the journey before you travel it.
You can't connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backwards - steve jobs
Thanks and I will see you in the next one.
